Logo Design

The purpose of a logo is to identify. Logos must be immediately recognizable and represent the appropriate visual statement (i.e. professional, admirable, trustworthy, clean, reliable, etc.).

The logo designs should be unique and different from other logos of the similar company or market.


A good logo is distinctive, appropriate, practical, graphic and simple in form, and it conveys the owner’s intended message. A concept or “meaning” is usually behind an effective logo, and it communicates the intended message. A logo should be able to be printed at any size and, in most cases, be effective without color.

1. Sketch at least 5 rough thumbnail sketches to brainstorm ideas.
2. Choose your favorite design and draw a more clear concept.
3. Turn in the thumbnail sketches and the concept by Wednesday for critique & grade, be ready to explain context and intention (11/15).
3. Make your design in Adobe Illustrator in black and white. [graded]
4. Turn your black and white logo into final color design.
5. Export your design as PNG
6. Add context to your logo and make a presentation page (8.5"x11")
7. Turn in the (1)Presentation page, (2)PNG file of your logo design and (3).ai (adobe illustrator) file of your logo design. [DUE Friday, 12/1]

By Wednesday (11/15), on a sheet of paper or document:
-sketch 5 rough thumbnail sketches
-draw a clear concept of your favorite idea
-write what your logo is for (i.e. computer, video game company, restaurant, band, superhero, delivery service, streaming media, car, sportswear, etc.) and what the "company" believes in (i.e. efficiency, durability, customer service, beauty, variety, etc.)
-make sure your name is on it
